Welcome to the Homepage of the Department of Justice of the Hong
Kong Special Administrative Region.
Hong Kong entered into a new era when China resumed
the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997. During this historic
period, there has been unprecedented interest, both locally and globally, in Hong
Kong's legal system. That system is firmly based on the rule of law and an independent
judiciary, and is one of the cornerstones of Hong Kong's way of life.
Within the legal system, the Department of Justice
has a significant role to play. It is responsible for all prosecutions; it drafts
all Government legislation; and it advises Government bureaux and departments
on a vast array of legal issues.
We
hope this homepage will help Web surfers understand Hong Kong's legal system and
appreciate the vital legal services provided by the Department of Justice.
