Contract Legal Clerk
(Salary: HK$23,585 per month)

Entry Requirements :
Candidates should have –
(a)(i) Level 3 or equivalent [Note (1)] or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) [Note (2)], or equivalent; or
(ii) Grade E or above in two subjects at Advanced Level in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination and Level 3 [Note (3)] / Grade C or above in three other subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) [Note (2)], or equivalent; and
(b) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 3 [Note (3)] or above in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent.

Notes:
(1) For appointment purpose, “Attained with Distinction” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade C in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 3 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE.
(2) The subjects may include Chinese Language and English Language.
(3) For appointment purpose, “Grade C” in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to “Level 3” in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.

Duties : To be deployed to the Legal Enhancement and Development Office in the Secretary for Justice's Office or other office of the Department of Justice to assist professional officers or other senior officers in carrying out paralegal work including but not limited to –
(1) carrying out legal research, preparing or translating documents such as letters, papers and reports and arranging routine circulation of correspondence or documents;
(2) assisting in liaison with and coordination amongst different divisions within DoJ and outside stakeholders or participants of events through correspondence, telephone call or other means of communications;
(3) providing support in events organizing such as receiving visiting delegations, organising outgoing visits and in-house seminars; and
(4) performing other duties as assigned by supervisors from time to time.

Terms of Appointment: The successful candidate will normally be appointed on non-civil service contract terms for around 9 to 12 months. Renewal of contract will be subject to the service need of the Department of Justice and the candidate’s performance.

Fringe Benefits : Rest days, statutory holidays (or substituted holidays), paid annual leave of 14 days per year of service, maternity leave/paternity leave, sickness allowance, where appropriate, will be granted in accordance with the provisions of the contract.

The information should include - (i) gradings of all subjects taken in public examinations from secondary educations onwards; (ii) the course/programme title of their post-secondary studies (if any); (iii) the exact start and end dates of period(s) of their academic studies and employment in the format as required in the application (if any); and (iv) employment records with detailed description of duties (if any). Copies of local qualification documents or employment records are not required at this stage of application. For qualifications obtained from institutions outside Hong Kong, copies of the relevant transcripts/diplomas/certificates/other qualification documents should be submitted by email to sjo@doj.gov.hk by the application deadline. If applicants fail to provide the information as required, their applications will not be considered. The online application number should be quoted in the email and on every page of the copies of the supporting documents.

As invitations or notifications will be sent to candidates by email, candidates should provide an accurate email address in their applications. Candidates are responsible for checking their emails to ensure that invitation(s) or notification(s) will be duly received.

Candidates who are selected for interview will normally receive an invitation by email about 2 to 4 weeks after the closing date for application. Those who are not invited for interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.

General Notes :
(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(g) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications.
