Secretary for Justice

On behalf of the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I welcome you to the Hong Kong Legal Services Forum which will be held in Shanghai on 6 July 2010. The theme of the Forum is “Hong Kong Legal Services – Global Vision”. We have great pleasure of co-hosting the Forum with the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration (Asia Office) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

Over the years, Hong Kong has developed into a global financial centre and our legal services played a significant part in this development. Our experienced legal professionals with global exposure and our independent judiciary of international repute have all contributed to this success. With China’s rise as one of the great economic powers in the world and its enterprises becoming increasingly more outward looking, the demand for legal services has grown significantly. I believe that Hong Kong is in a position to share our experience with the corporate and legal sectors of the Mainland. The Forum will be devoted to various aspects of international trade, corporate finance and governance matters as well as dispute resolution.

As Shanghai plays host to “Expo 2010” with the theme of “Better City, Better Life”, this will be an opportune time for Hong Kong to demonstrate our qualities as a world class city and our strength as a regional centre of legal services and dispute resolution. I am confident that the Forum will provide participants with ample opportunity to explore ways in which they can benefit from working along with our legal and dispute resolution professionals.

I wish you a rewarding and enjoyable time at this Forum and look forward to seeing you in Shanghai!
