Elaine Liu studied law in the University of Hong Kong and the University of London. She obtained LL.B. in 1987 and LL.M. in 1989 respectively.

Miss Liu was admitted as a Solicitor in Hong Kong in 1992 and had practiced as a Solicitor since then until 2001. She was also admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales in 1993.

In 2001, she was called to the Hong Kong Bar and started her private practice as a Barrister-at-law in Sir Oswald Cheung's Chambers.

Miss Liu is a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and is an Accredited Mediator, accredited by Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) (2001), Centre of Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in England (2009) and Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL) (2013). Miss Liu is also a Mediator Assessor.

Fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, she has a broad civil practice with particular focus on commercial, insolvency, international trade, trust, probate and succession. She is regularly appointed as mediator and arbitrator in commercial disputes and has successfully assisted many PRC parties and multi-national companies in resolving their disputes through alternative dispute resolutions or litigation involving jurisdictions in Hong Kong, PRC, Stockholm and British Virgin Islands.

Miss Liu was a Council member of the Hong Kong Bar Association in 2005-2010 and 2012-2014. She had been the Chairman of the Young Barristers Committee and Publication Committee of the Hong Kong Bar Association. In terms of public service and appointments, Miss Liu is currently the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of Estate Agents Authority, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance) and Vice Chairman of Licensing Appeal Board.
