Details of the Hong Kong Legal Services Forum 2018

"From Bay Area to International Arena"

Background:

The Department of Justice (“DoJ”) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is committed to consolidating Hong Kong’s position as a leading centre for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2010, the biennial Hong Kong Legal Services Forum has been held in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao and Nanjing to promote the international legal and dispute resolution services of Hong Kong to enterprises and other service users in the Mainland.

With strategic opportunities arising from the national development plan for a world-class city cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area (“Bay Area”) and with Hong Kong being an important support area for the Belt and Road Initiative, and building on the success of the previous four Forums, the DoJ has decided to return to Guangzhou to host the fifth Hong Kong Legal Services Forum on 5 September 2018 in collaboration with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Asia Office of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission Hong Kong Arbitration Center, the China Maritime Arbitration Commission Hong Kong Arbitration Center and the Asian Academy of International Law.

Featuring the theme “From Bay Area to International Arena”, the fifth Forum will discuss issues of interest to enterprises in the Bay Area including sound risk management in the context of cross-border transactions in commerce, trade and investment and development of overseas markets. The Forum will promote the international legal and dispute resolution services that Hong Kong can offer, as well as facilitating exchanges and further cooperation opportunities between the legal and dispute resolution sectors as well as businesses of Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Hong Kong has a legal system which is familiar to and well recognized by the international business community. The legal practitioners and dispute resolution professionals of Hong Kong are highly regarded. They are experienced in various specialised areas of law and are acquainted with Chinese and foreign business and social cultures, and can provide diverse professional services in line with international practice. The Forum will bring together Hong Kong legal practitioners and dispute resolution professionals who have extensive international experience to engage in discussions on various practical legal issues commonly faced by Mainland enterprises, including legal risk management and effective dispute resolution for Bay Area enterprises when conducting cross-border trade and investment, legal issues which businesses may encounter under the new trends in innovative technology, and new developments in dispute resolution etc.. A mock arbitration will also be staged at the Forum to demonstrate effective dispute resolution by way of arbitration. In addition, participants may consult the legal practitioners directly on specialised areas of law during the networking session to be held after the Forum.

Objective:

The Forum, with the theme of “From Bay Area to International Arena”, seeks to promote the legal and dispute resolution services of Hong Kong to enterprises and other service users in the Mainland. It is part of the DoJ's ongoing effort to consolidate Hong Kong's status as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre in the Asia-Pacific region.
